How Israel and Germany take on Climate Change
Die „Planetaren Grenzen“, die Grenzen der Belastbarkeit unserer Erde, sind in einigen Bereichen fast erreicht oder gar überschritten. Das kohlenstoffbasierte Weltwirtschaftssystem befindet sich zwar an vielen Stellen im Umbruch und auch ein globaler Wertewandel ist erkennbar, die notwendige Trendumkehr, die „Große Transformation“ in Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft steht jedoch aus. Gleichzeitig verlangt der Klimawandel weltweit bereits umfassende Anpassungsleistungen, zum Beispiel bei der Wasserversorgung, der Mobilität oder Hitze in Städten. In diesem Spannungsfeld bewegen sich auch die beiden Industrieländer Israel und Deutschland.

In der Webinarreihe soll gemeinsam der Frage nachgegangen werden, welche Herausforderungen die „Große Transformation“ vom fossilen System zu Klimaverträglichkeit und Nachhaltigkeit in beiden Ländern mit sich bringt und welche Handlungsansätze verfolgt werden. Aus beiden Ländern wird je eine Referentin / ein Referent aus Politik, Wissenschaft oder Initiativen eingeladen und mit den Teilnehmenden diskutieren. Dabei werden die jeweiligen Rahmenbedingungen, Strategien sowie Best-Practice-Beispiele betrachtet.
The ‘planetary boundaries’, the limits of our Earth's resilience, have almost been reached or even exceeded in some areas [1]. The stability of the Earth system and our livelihoods are increasingly at risk. Although the carbon-based global economic system is undergoing radical change in many areas and a global shift in values is also evident, the necessary reversal of trends, the ‘great transformation’ in the economy, politics and society, has yet to take place. At the same time, climate change is already requiring comprehensive adaptation measures worldwide, for example in water supply and agriculture. The two industrialised countries Israel and Germany are also caught up in this conflict.
Israel has made the fight against climate change a key national security issue. [2] The country aims to reduce its CO2 emissions to zero by 2050 and phase out coal by 2025. Israel fosters a culture of innovation with pioneering solutions for sustainable, climate-friendly development.
Rhineland-Palatinate was one of the first federal states to introduce and update its own state climate protection law in 2014. The federal state aims to achieve climate neutrality between 2035 and 2040. By 2030, the electricity supply is to come entirely from renewable energies.
The webinar series will explore the challenges posed by the ‘great transformation’ from a fossil fuel-based system to climate compatibility and sustainability in both countries and the approaches being pursued. Following an introductory seminar, the subsequent webinars will examine key areas of action such as energy, water, mobility and agriculture. One speaker from each state will be invited from the fields of politics, science or initiatives to discuss these issues with the participants. The respective framework conditions, strategies and best practice examples will be examined.
